New Zealand's passion for running was ignited when, against all odds, two Auckland lads from the same running club stunned the world in Olympic triumphs that put our tiny Pacific nation on the map. Peter Snell in the 800m and Murray Halberg in the 5000m, that arguably gave us the most famous hour of NZ sport.Thirteen years on from that moment and after a chance trip to witness the Sydney City to Surf event, Colin Kay and Eric Woods, the then President of the Auckland Joggers Club, dreamt up a fun run like no other: ‘Round the Bays’.The first question was, where to run?
On 17 March 1972, 700 people showed up for the inaugural Round the Bays event in Auckland. Since then participant numbers have soared to over 35,000 in Tāmaki Makaurau, but the core bones have not changed.

Fast forward to 2026 and we're asking all Kiwis to join the movement and the Round the Bays series! Taking our formula for fun in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland down the coast to Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington and across the Strait to Ōtautahi Christchurch.
Windy Welly we're back again for Round the Bays 2026! Our namesake for the past 47 years, Stuff Events manages Round the Bays Wellington, the largest mass participation event in the Lower North Island.
It doesn't end there! Across Cook Strait, we encourage Cantabs and fellow South Islanders to pound the pavement as we take on Round the Bays in Ōtautahi Christchurch for the second year.
Like all of our events, there will be an injection of fun in each location. We may even have a few tricks up our sleeve! Rest assured though, our epic partners and hospitality will be waiting for you with open arms after you cross the finish line.
We provide the entertainment, a finisher’s medal, picturesque views and an unforgettable morning on the course. What’s not to love!Do one, do two, do all three! We’re super proud that the Southern Cross Round the Bays 2026 fun run series is New Zealand’s largest participation sports event.
